Obama Reinstates the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board – Disbanded by Bush Administration

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the members of the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (SEAB). Eliminated during the last administration, SEAB is being re-established under the Federal Advisory Committee Act. The 12-member board comprising scientists, business executives, academics and former government officials, will serve as an independent advisory committee to DOE Secretary Steven Chu.

The board will provide advice and recommendations to Chu on the DOE’s basic and applied research, economic and national security policy, educational issues, operational issues and other activities as directed by the secretary. SEAB reports directly to the energy secretary. It was chartered in 1990 to provide the secretary with timely and balanced external advice on issues concerning the DOE. The board is expected to meet twice a year and at other times as needed. Subcommittees are also expected to be organized under SEAB.

Members of the SEAB are Norman Augustine, former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin; Ralph Cicerone, president of National Academy of Sciences; John Deutch, former under secretary of energy; Nicholas Donofrio, former executive vice president of information and technology at IBM; Alexis Herman, former secretary of labor; Chad Holliday Jr., former CEO of Dupont; Michael McQuade, senior vice president of United Technologies Corp.; William Perry, former secretary of defense; Arthur Rosenfeld , former commissioner of the California Energy Commission; Susan Tierney, managing principle of the Analysis Group; Steven Westly, managing partner of the Westly Group; and Daniel Yergin, president of Cambridge Energy Research Associates.
