Diversification and New Opportunities for Concentrated Solar Power

The Concentrated Solar Power community is set to meet this 13–14 November as CSP Today Sevilla Summit returns in its sixth edition, complete with international delegations from the most promising emerging markets for Concentrated Solar Power in 2012, two site visits to Gemasolar and Palma del Rio II and the CSP Today .

Given the dispatchability of Concentrated Solar Power, clean and reliable power is generated and can be distributed when needed, accommodating a larger share of variable energy sources while increasing the overall grid flexibility. By 2050, with appropriate support, CSP could provide 11.3% of global electricity, with 9.6% from solar power and 1.7% from backup fuels (fossil fuels or ).

But despite the advantages of Concentrated Solar Power over other , it also costs more. Furthermore, the drastic cuts in Spanish subsidies for renewable energies have created a great deal of uncertainty among the global community. All these changes indicate that the time has come for the Concentrated Solar Thermal Power community to react to change and accelerate the market’s evolution to achieve true competitiveness, and this can only be accomplished by expanding the industry’s reach to new horizons through diversification.

And despite limited expansion in Spain in the short-term, opportunities for the CSP community continue to flourish around the globe. Within the last year, several emerging markets such as South Africa, Morocco, Mexico and more, have launched their first CSP power plants and the industry quickly expanded to new horizons, while countries like Chile, Israel and Italy have indicated intentions to install CSP plants in the short term. Additionally, CSP and biomass hybrids are already powering towards competitiveness offering the lucrative opportunity of maximizing the output while drastically reducing the costs of deployment.

For that reason, the 6th International Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Summit in Seville has a special focus on industry diversification, new technologies and lucrative new markets. The summit, widely known as CSP Today Seville will take place on the 13th – 14th of November in Seville, Spain.

Headlining the conference will be a series of detailed case studies, interactive panel sessions and extended industry discussions providing delegates with a strategy to achieve competitiveness and sustainability through expansion; with insight and expertise from top executives from the entire CSP value chain, members from the financial community, government representatives, key associations and for the first time, international delegations representing the emerging markets with the upmost potential to invest in CSP including government representatives and local private companies from South Africa, Chile, India, Morocco and Namibia.
